There are several basic criteria involved in taking excellent underwater photos. The first step is to become a good diver. Second, learn and understand the science of photos well. Third, get good quality equipment. There is a lot of equipment that is available that will help you take good photos while scuba diving.

There are several options to consider in regards to quality equipment for underwater photography. If you are just starting out, there are many places that provide cameras for rental to scuba divers at your dive location. You may want to purchase an inexpensive one-time use underwater camera to practice with before you actually go on your dive. Once you decide if you really want to take the next step in taking underwater photos, then it recommended that you buy your own equipment.

One of the simplest cameras to purchase is the Sea&Sea MX-10. It makes a good camera for the novice to use to take good underwater pictures. The next step up is the Sea&Sea Seamaster Pro EX, which allows more control. With it, you can set shutter speed, focus distance, and use a closeup feature.

More expensive cameras for this type of photography are the Motor Marine II, Nikonos V, or a top of the line SLR camera with a couple of lenses, housing, and two strobes with mobile ball-joint arms. The latter provides the best quality pictures, but you need to be very experienced with it, or the pictures will not turn out well.
