When getting into the hobby of scuba diving or snorkeling, it is a good idea to own your own equipment. Sometimes there can be problems associated with wearing a rented wet suit or other gear like a skin rash or other unpleasant skin related problems. So get on board with all of the appropriate gear required.
The first thing you should have is a mask, fins and snorkel. It's a good idea if you wear prescription glasses to have your mask prescription also. Carry along extra straps for your mask and some anti-fog solution. If you go on vacation intending on snorkeling or diving, it's a good idea to bring along a spare mask in the event something happens. Carry extra fin straps in case one breaks so that you won’t have to end diving adventure. You will need a buoyancy compensator vest, regulator and octopus, wetsuit, a depth gauge, tank-pressure gauge, an underwater timer and compass.
Some other essential gear would be a slate for writing underwater and a dive log book. Underwater lights, at least two for safety, should be waterproof down to a depth of at least 130’. You will need extra batteries and bulbs. It is a good idea to use new bulbs for each dive. A gun-type flashlight with a lanyard attaching it to your weight belt is a good choice for your main flashlight.
You will need a knife that is rust-proof, stainless steel with a sheath to attach to your calf. The knife should have two different edges, serrated and regular, as well as prying options to cut nylon ropes. It is recommended that the diver carry a diving flag with a float. Some states require divers to have this equipment when snorkeling or diving. All of these items are necessary gear that will help provide a safe and successful dive or an enjoyable snorkeling adventure.
