Scuba Diving and Weight Belts

The reason that scuba divers wear weight belts during diving is to help them with their descent. Because of the buoyancy of the diver’s body and their wet suit, it is a necessity. If a diver gets into an emergency situation, they will be able to release the weight belt or some of the weights to help them rise to the top. It is important not to do this unless it is an emergency because it can cause the diver problems if they were to rise to the surface too fast.

There are several types of weight belts that you can choose from and several different types of weights. You can get rubber belts or the more popular nylon weight belt. The weights are square pieces of lead. This is because lead doesn’t corrode as easily as other metals. Some divers prefer to use weight belts that have pouches in them that they can use to fill with lead shot. It is like the shot that is use for firing shot guns. If the diver uses lead shot, it will form to their body making it more comfortable.

It is important that the diver has the belt fitted to them and that they allow for the compression of their wet suit. They should also make sure that the belt is not too long, getting in their way while they are diving. They will have to take into consideration their body weight and the weight of their diving gear when they are deciding on the amount of weight to put in.
