A dive log is an important record for any diver to keep up to date, whether they are recreational or professional. A dive log is a continuous record of individual and group dives with specific measurements including maximum depth, total dive time, location, water temperature, and special equipment. Each diver is responsible for maintaining their individual dive log. A log can be kept in paper or digital format. There are many online programs that a diver can use to create a usable and easy to reference log. Many dive computers can also download dive information directly to these logs.
Some dive logs are kept online in dive communities where other people can view the dive locations and ask one another about the sites. Pictures and video can often be uploaded and buddies can be found so that a trip can be planned and safely executed. Online communities are great resources for divers because there are members who have been all over the world on dive trips. There is a lot of information on specific sites that a diver can research, including depth, animal and plant life, temperature, dive guides, etc.
Divers with advanced certifications need to document when they have executed technical dives such as cave or wreck diving. These specialized dives require extra equipment and experience. Dive guides specific to the area are valuable resources to make a dive trip safe and enjoyable. Many will assist with completing dive logs accurately. Ensuring accurate documentation of dive logs can assist with repeated dives in a short time period and also serve as a record of dive experience.
